Carl Jung defines synchronicity as a meaningful coincidence, and this past month I had two synchronistic events happen that both tie back to the band Tool and the number 13, adding to the significance, this is the band that lead to my discovery of Carl Jung and a band that I give a lot of credit to for my awakening so to speak.
The first synchronistic event happened at the beginning of the month, on my way back from the ski slopes I decided to stop in a local rock shop and browse around, coming across an Ammonite fossil that I couldn’t pass up, I thought about my favorite Tool song, Lateralus and uttered some of the lyrics in my head, “Spiral Out….keep going…” For those not familiar with an Ammonite it is an extinct sea creature that left behind a spiral shell and is often used to represent the Fibonacci Spiral or Golden Ratio. So, I made my purchase, hopped in my truck and set off for home. Less than a mile into to my drive, the song Lateralus came on XM radio! I have been listening to this station for years and while they play Tool I have never heard them play Lateralus and in fact have not heard them play it again since this moment! What are the odds, I utter these lyrics, purchase the fossil and then this song comes on immediately after! What is even more significant is the fact that the song Lateralus integrates the Fibonacci sequence into its structure, not only in the syllables per line of its verses (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...) but also in its time signatures which all ties back into the Ammonite Spiral! What a beautiful moment in time to experience and the significant correlation of the two events intersecting is beyond wild! I mean I acquire this physical representation of the Golden Ratio and then this song that has so much meaning to me with direct connection to the Fibonacci Spiral comes on moments after I walk out the door with this treasured memento! Everything really is connected and our reality is so much more profound than what we have been told by the mainstream.
If this was simply an isolated event, I would still consider it statistically significant but what followed next pushed the envelope a little further! For those not familiar with the band, the lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan is also a wine enthusiast and produces his own wine in Jerome, AZ and ever since my friend and I visited a few years ago I have become a little bit of a wine enthusiast myself making the occasional purchase of Caduceus products. It has been about a year since my last online purchase, but last week I had a little voice in the back of my head tell me to check their website, after first I brushed it off and forgot momentarily, and then again, the thought arose to check the site and so I did. At the top of the page was a limited release of a 1.5 L Magnum 2013 Primer Paso. Without getting to deep into it, 13 is my number, I see it everywhere, oddly enough it is also a Fibonacci number and a number that resonates with the same friend I went to Jerome with and who introduced me to Tool. This event is somewhat of a synchronicity but not main event, stay tuned I am getting there! I will admit 13 was the leading factor on why I purchased this particular bottle, that and I have had the Primer Paso before and it is one of my favorites! Anyways, I made the impulsive buy and waited for its arrival via UPS.
The package was set to arrive but due to work and the required adult signature, I had UPS hold my package at the depot for pickup since I would not be home to sign. Here is the synchronicity and a sure sign the Universe has a sense of humor! I drove to the depot, grabbed my package, climbed into my truck, turned the engine over, began searching for a knife to open the box, and guess what song comes on XM radio? Sober by Tool, how very appropriate as I open a box containing a 2013 bottle of wine from the leader singer’s winery! Oh the irony! A song about addiction and dealing with sobriety comes on as I open up a box with a bottle of wine! Even stranger, if you watch the music video there are several scenes of a Claymation character opening a box and is looking inside it....which is exactly what I was doing while listening to this song. I did not even think about this fact until I started writing this article, certainly makes one think and laugh a little as the rabbit hole always goes deeper!
I had to stop for a moment and think, really how cool was this moment, the odds of all these events syncing up for this one moment, the random urge to check the site, the 2013 release that pushed me to make the purchase, the holding of the package at the UPS center that led to the exact moment in time where I would climb into my truck and unbox a bottle of Maynard’s wine as the radio randomly plays Tool’s 1993 song Sober!
On a slightly more serious note, reflecting on these events, I recall an Alan Watts lecture about the eternal now and how if we get too caught up in our “fleshless list of distractions” we miss the point and the wonder of life. It is moments like the aforementioned above that really inspire me to keep going and riding that spiral to the end!
As I sit working on this article, that same friend mentioned in this article calls unexpectedly…the synchronicities are strong this week…
